Newsletter - April 2003

It's been a while since the last newsletter, but this issue is stuffed full of useful information, so please read on! As ever, you can keep in touch via our Yahoogroups email list - it really does make it a lot easier to contact everyone about special events, venue changes and the like. It's easy to join - details on our webpage at camcircus.org .

Workshop update

PLEASE NOTE: Due to the British Juggling Convention (further details below), there will be NO workshop on Sunday 13th April as many of us may not make it back in time. However, there will probably be a few of us in the pub as usual at 8 p.m. Apart from that workshops run as usual every Sunday from 5 till 8 p.m., all the way through until July when we take our annual two month summer break.

News, rumours and gossip

For those of you who don't know, myself (Charlie) and Alex have decided to finally tie the knot - no plans yet, it will probably be a long while till the wedding, so no need to rush out and buy us expensive presents. Oh, go on then, if you insist!

BRITISH JUGGLING CONVENTION - Thursday 10th until Sunday 13th April

This annual event is in Brighton this year, and promises to be great fun. Four days of juggling and workshops, meeting new and old friends, shows every night, on-site catering, a parade through Brighton on the Saturday…if you have never been to a Juggling Convention before, this could be your chance to start! Don't worry if you're only a beginner - there will be plenty of people there in a similar position, and it's all very friendly. There will be lots of Cambridge people going - so if you need a lift, loan of a tent, or any advice post to the Yahoogroup mentioned above. You can find out more about what a Juggling Convention involves here or try the BJC website at www.bjc2003.co.uk . See you there!

The future of the Community Circus - How you can get involved

Have you ever wondered who organizes CCC, or where the equipment comes from, or thought we might be able to put on a show? CCC is run by a voluntary management committee and a part-time administrator (currently me - Charlie) and we're shortly going to hold informal elections for a new committee. If you want to get involved in running the Community Circus please keep an eye open on Sunday for further announcements. You can join the committee even if you're only a beginner juggler, you can even join if you're under 18 - we usually meet in someone's house every couple of months for an informal chat, and we discuss what new equipment to buy, what events to organize and whether to hold our own Cambridge Juggling Convention (so far we've held five very successful events). If you need more information please talk to Charlie.

Cambridge Community Circus - On Tour!

As the weather warms up there will be lots of opportunities to juggle outside of the normal Sunday workshop - we're involved in lots of different events, please let Charlie know if you would like to help out by teaching others or performing. Normally CCC makes a small amount of money from each event, but we can pay expenses if necessary. You don't have to be an expert to help!

Saturday 26th April - Soham Gala Event, Charlie will be attending to teach workshops but could do with some help! Sanjay and Beinn have come to Soham before, they're very friendly and grateful for anything we can do.

Wednesday 7th May - Charlie is teaching circus skills at a special event organized by Cambridge Co-operative for Homeless Action, at St. Michael House on Trinity Street, pop in and say hello!

Saturday 17th May - Teversham School Spring Fayre - they have asked if we can provide any entertainment, more details to follow

Saturday 26th July - Cambourne Summer Festival are looking for jugglers to come along, more details as we get them

Juggling Conventions

It's well worth going to a Juggling Convention, no matter what your skill level - it's a chance to get inspired, swap tricks and buy new toys. There is a list of future conventions at http://www.jugglingdb.com/events - here are some we recommend:

Crawley Juggling Convention, held in August - small, friendly and fun

The European Juggling Convention, 5th-13th August - over 3000 jugglers on an island in Denmark various Cambridge jugglers will be there

Bristol Juggling Convention - Possibly the most laid back convention, held in late September. Well worth visiting - it's 9 days long and held on a hill overlooking the Severn valley.

Future Projects

I've been wondering whether we should put on a show this year - rehearsals during the autumn, probably on weekends, culminating in a show open to the public around Christmas. If you have any comments or ideas, or would like to be involved, please let me know. We'll probably hold an informal meeting soon to discuss this idea.

Fact of the month

Vova and Olga, young Russian jugglers, have recently broke the world record for passing 11 clubs between two people, with 100 successful passes. The wonderful thing is that they're only 15 and 12 years old respectively! Check out their website at www.galchenko.com.

Take care and happy juggling!
