Events

Children in Need

Eddie Konig is once again organising a large party of jugglers and friends to raise money for BBC Children in Need. For those of you who don't know, this is a regular event for the Community Circus; we usually raise between £500 and £800 for the charity.

If you'd like to come along, please turn up at Lion's Yard (that's the covered shopping centre in the centre of town) at 10 a.m. on Saturday 21st November. Bring your props, a smile and some bright, colourful clothes! We should be finished by midday. If you have any friends or family that would like to come along and shake a bucket, please bring them too - and make sure they bring a bucket - Eddie will provide Children in Need stickers.

St.Ives Christmas Lights

If you'd like to come along and raise some money for the Community Circus, we have been asked to perform at the turning-on of the St.Ives Christmas Lights on Saturday 28th November between 5 and 8 p.m. There will be a short parade followed by entertaining the crowds. If you'd like to come along please tell Charlie straight away - there are some lifts available. Bright and warm clothing is probably a good idea. You might even meet someone famous - last year they had 'Ricky' from EastEnders turning on the lights…

Steve Rawlings

On 9th January CCC presents Steve Rawlings and friends in Live & Unstable - Steve has chosen Cambridge to premiere his new show which features jugglers, aerialists, wrestlers, magicians and even an opera singer! Some of you may remember Steve from a Cambridge Convention a few years ago - he's a brilliant juggler with a crazy stage personality and always worth seeing. Please tell your family and friends - this is a show that even non-jugglers will enjoy immensely. Tickets are £7.50 / £9.50 and are available from the Mumford Theatre. You should all receive some flyers shortly - please pass them round at home, at school or at work. CCC is getting a share of the door and it should also be a marvellous publicity opportunity for us - so please help us to fill the theatre.

Workshops

We've now starting running some absolute beginner’s trapeze classes - if you're interested in having a go see Charlie, Mark or Chloe. The Community Circus Library now contains some new videos - The 1998 Community Show, CCC at Strawberry Fair 1998 and a short video of one students' experience with the Zippo's Academy of Circus Arts. Remember if you want to borrow anything from the box, there is a book to sign things out in - you can borrow anything for up to two weeks. You must be a member to borrow anything from the Library.

Other news

Committee

The new management committee elected at the Annual General Meeting is: Simon Carter, Helen Coutts, Claire Durant, Charlie Hull, Sanjay Joshi, Eddie Konig, Rob Lister, Dizzy Manning & Mark Tillotson.

Please talk to anyone on the Committee if you would like something brought up at the next meeting or if you have any questions or suggestions about how the Community Circus is run.

Community Show 1999

As some of you may know, the Community Circus is extremely low on funds at the moment; this is mainly due to the cut in funding from the City Council - this year we received only £2200 in grant funding, compared to £6700 two years ago. Although we've raised some of our workshop charges and made great efforts to raise some more funds on our own (for example the Strawberry Fair gig raised £300) we are currently not in a position to run a Community Show next year.

This is a terrible shame as the Community Show is probably the most important thing we do. We have thus been rushing about looking for other sources of funding; we have made an application to the National Lottery Charities Board for around £3500 to fund the Community Show - so keep your fingers crossed and we'll keep you posted. Anyone with any other ideas for sources of funding please see Charlie or anyone on the Management Committee. Perhaps the company you work for (or one of your parents work for) would like to sponsor the Community Circus? Even a little would help.

If all this falls through we will still try and run a show of some kind - more news in the next Newsletter.

Videos

We still have a few copies left of the videos of the 1998 Community Show and CCC at Strawberry Fair 1998 . Please see Charlie if you're interested - the tapes cost us £5 to duplicate so we're charging £6 per tape. The videos of last year's Community Show and Convention are still being finished - we'll let you know when they're available.

He's behind you! Oh no he isn't!

Heir of Insanity are about to start performing in Mother Goose at the Theatre Royal Brighton - if you're down that end of the country this Christmas do go and see them - the show runs from 10th December to 10th January with a few days off. Tickets cost between £7.50 and £12.50 (tel. 01273 328488) - cheap when you consider it's not every day you can see some of the country's top Circus performers on stage with Christopher Biggins and Derek Griffiths

If there is enough interest we may organise a special CCC trip - for which we should be able to get specially reduced prices. See Charlie if you're interested.
