While the café had three partners (Ole, Leiv and Steve) struggling to make the paperwork and bills behave, it also had (from mid-July to the end of October 1995) me hustling to make sure that customers were provided with good excuses for handing over their money. This ran to organising staffing, stock-control, making sure that all the stuff that needs to be kept clean was kept clean and, of course, large amounts of actual running around serving customers. I had effectively been managing the café for some time before the start of October when I fell ill with 'flu and stopped doing it, with the result that folk realised it was what I was doing – at that point it became my official rôle. The difference was purely academic, though: I was, after all, a volunteer and only there pro tem.
